Hanging by a Thread
12 Strategies for staying sane in the first year of Motherhood
Available July 2010
This little book is for new mums who are transitioning from work into motherhood, and who are finding the transition difficult or who are suffering from postnatal depression. It has 12 simple tips for taking care of yourself. Motherhood is not an innate ability, but rather is a set of learnt skills, and there is no right or wrong way to do it.
Hanging by a Thread is written by Dr Mataji Kennedy, a clinical psychologist who specialises in helping new mums adjust to motherhood and who has also experienced postnatal depression first hand. It is written in bite size chapters so you can read it when you have a spare moment and it contains simple, common sense strategies and stories of other mums who have been through it.

What do others say about the book......
Motherhood is a wonderful gift and like every gift there are often surprises. Typically as women we set such high expectations and when things don’t go to plan we feel failure. Thankfully for new Mums Dr Mataji Kennedy's first hand experience transitioning from a successful career into motherhood have inspired her to help others. She has brought together in 12 simple strategies very real stories, experiences and advice that captures the essence of motherhood. Hanging by a Thread is a wonderfully simple, touching and enriching book that you must read; it will help nurture, allow you to be you and importantly guide you in the right direction through this time.
Wendy Lenton (Mother of three little ones, and currently HR Director GWF Australia & NZ )
Hanging by a Thread by Dr Mataji Kennedy is a must-read for all new mothers, particularly those who had their own career prior to becoming a mum. Adjusting to motherhood can be extremely difficult, and I know this from personal experience as I had both of my children while running a business. I found the change to my life profound and indeed, I wish I had had the benefit of Hanging by a Thread at the time, as I believe the book would have helped me to cope during an exceedingly difficult time. The book provides useful tips on how to cope with a new baby and how to deal with your overwhelming fatigue and feelings of inadequacy especially where new mums don’t have the support of close family around them.
Allison Stanfield (Mother of two little ones, and CEO e.law Asia Pacific & Telstra Business Woman of the year finalist 2009).
A lifeline for mums feeling isolated and at their wits end; this book is a must for every mum suffering from the demands of parenthood. Finally a book that focuses squarely on PND, it's impact and how to survive it! The honest yet uplifting stories of how mums survive PND provide more than a glimmer of hope; they demonstrate there are ways to come back from the brink and enjoy the wonderful things parenthood has to offer. The practical tips provide a simple and easy roadmap for recovery! Well done Dr Kennedy; mums have been waiting for a book like this for decades.
